Product Description

Paper and sea glass love. Island bliss.

Three days on a small island on the edge of the world, exploring inner and outer landscapes in wild surroundings.

Firstly, comb the beach for driftwood, warm up with some bookbinding techniques, before compiling your content using folding, cutting, writing, painting, story-telling and mapping. Then it is time to sew, using a Coptic binding stitch to create your personal piece of work. There will also be opportunities to explore the hills and dunes, and the Abbey.

The course includes three days tuition, four night’s accommodation, all food, all basic materials, beach walks, pebble-picking, a sofa-with-a-view, film night and cake.

Read about the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Iona Driftwood Binding Retreat by clicking on each year.

This does not include transport, insurance and waterproofs. The course will take place at the Iona Hostel, where comfortable accommodation is provided. You’ll share a room with one other person. More information about the hostel can be found on its website.

Rachel’s workshops combine striking settings with learning bookbinding techniques and exploring creative avenues – the structure and the content of the books being equal partners in the creative process.

It’s been along time coming but my goal for 2014 is to quit my job and do what I love and it involves you and paper.

A huge thank you goes to Rachel Hazell for hosting such a marvellously inspiring creative weekend. I wandered on beaches, met some fabulous people, had great food in fantastic surroundings, explored my own creativity, was taught with patience and a lovely light touch, ate marvellous cake. And made a book. Joyful.

Despite the stormy weather, our travel was perfectly timed to land us at the course location at Iona Hostel without getting wet. Rachel’s enthusiasm and radiant positivity wrapped us in a creative cloud and miraculously turned our aspirations into reality. Yes you can make a beautiful book out of driftwood. I have gained skills, ideas and inspiration through Rachel’s unflappable guidance sustained by the fabulous meals. There must be something about the kind of people that Rachel attracts for this programme on Iona, I met the most amazing, creative people. Iona became for me the Isle of Rainbows through Rachel’s tuition. Cant recommend this programme enough. Thank you Rachel
